He loved what he called its 'grand and generous manner, its joy and playfulness.' LAB proudly presents its next commissioned World Premiere, created by one of the country's most beloved choreographers, Sonya Tayeh. Western Symphony is set on a rugged Old West street populated by cowboys and dance hall girls! The steps Balanchine uses from the traditional ballet vocabulary allude to the steps, formations, and gestures of American folk dancing. The lively and familiar score consists of classic American folk songs, including Red River Valley, Old Taylor, Rye Whiskey, Good Night Ladies, Oh Dem Golden Slippers and The Girl I Left Behind Me.

Just when we thought that Im Hussein, Im Elias and their families were finally settled into the American way of life and had put all of their troubles behind them, the global economy takes a nosedive. What to do? If you've been following their comical cultural adjustments to
American life, you can anticipate some hilarious situations in 'Shoufou Alwawa Wayn' when they face foreclosure and a host of related money problems.

'Shoufou Alwawa Wayn' by AJWAL Theatrical Group will be performed in 2010-2011 in many cities in USA, Canada and Australia. AJYAL Theatrical Group, the first Arab-American theatre group in North America, has been in existence since 1988, staging many comedy productions over the years. Most of AJYAL Theatrical Group's shows poke fun at the everyday lives of Arab-Americans who are desperately trying to blend into the mainstream of American culture. The plays serve as a forum to help people laugh at their mistakes and mishaps but also to come to terms with social issues facing Arab-Americans.

Mendelssohn Concerto in D minor for Violin and Piano listen
Derek Bermel Sound Investment commission (world premiere)
Mozart Symphony No. 38 in D major, K. 504, “Prague”
listen

On January 19, 1787, the sweeping panoramic views and eclectic architecture of Prague set the backdrop for the highly-anticipated premiere of Mozart’s 38th Symphony. Now, pairing Mozart’s most dramatic Symphony with another world premiere, LACO recreates that excitement for the 10th anniversary of the Orchestra’s Sound Investment commissioning program. Derek Bermel’s features the soulful vocals of Brazilian-born Luciana Souza’s in his genre- ending new work. Jeffrey Kahane and concertmaster Margaret Batjer start off the evening with Mendelssohn’s joyful Double Concerto, demonstrating the camaraderie intrinsic to the LACO experience.

Grammy®-winner Luciana Souza “continues her captivating journey as a uniquely talented vocalist who organically crosses genre borders. Her music soulfully reflects, wistfully regrets, romantically woos, joyfully celebrates…” (Billboard Magazine)
Margaret Batjer displays “artistic polish…her intonation is very nearly flawless.” (Seattle Times)
LACO composer-in-residence Derek Bermel is a “brilliant musical vagabond [who] has made the sounds of the world his palette to create a singular artistic vision.” (Sequenza 21)
